How much coal do you consume per year?

This data point tracks the total amount of coal (in kilograms) used in stationary combustion sources, such as boilers or furnaces, within the reporting year. It helps quantify your direct emissions from fuel-based heating or energy generation systems.

What to include:

  • Include all coal used in stationary combustion systems operated by your company, such as industrial boilers, furnaces, or heating plants.

  • Only include usage that occurs within facilities under your operational control.

  • Report the total quantity for the full calendar year, converted into kilograms (kg), even if the original data is in tons, GJ, or another unit of measure.

  • If coal is used for primary heating, backup power, or specific thermal processes, this should be included.

What not to include:

  • Do not include coal used in mobile sources such as trains or vehicles.

  • Do not include charcoal or other biomass fuels, as these are reported under separate data points.

  • Also exclude any coal consumption by subcontractors, tenants, or in facilities not under your direct operational control, such as third-party operated warehouses or leased buildings where fuel use is not managed by your company.

Estimation Methodology:

  • If actual data for the last months of the reporting period isn’t available at the time of reporting, follow this approach:

Step-by-Step Estimation Rule:

  • Use actual monthly data for all available months in the reporting year.

  • Calculate the monthly average from the available months.

  • Multiply that average by the number of missing months to estimate those periods.

  • Add the estimated consumption to the actual year-to-date total.
