Description:

This data point records the total amount of thermal energy purchased from external heating plants and used for space heating or process heating within the company’s facilities during the reporting year. This typically includes district heating or heat supplied through pipelines from combined heat and power (CHP) plants or industrial heating providers. The unit of measurement is gigajoules (GJ).

What to include:

  • All purchased thermal energy from external heating plants used for building or process heating.

  • Heat supplied via district heating systems or direct pipelines.

  • Metered data from energy providers showing consumption in GJ, MWh, kWh, or other units (converted to GJ).

What not to include:

  • Heat generated internally (report separately under internal generation data points).

  • Cooling energy (district cooling or other) — covered in separate reporting.

  • Process heat from internal boilers or furnaces.

Estimation Methodology:

If actual year-end data is not available:

  1. Use available billing or meter data for all completed months in the reporting year.

  2. Calculate the average monthly consumption.

  3. Multiply the average by the number of missing months.

  4. Convert all data to GJ. For example:

    • 1 MWh = 3.6 GJ

    • 1 kWh = 0.0036 GJ
